5 Best Cloud Backups for Windows 8

So Windows 8 got released recently, and it’s definitely a big change from Windows 7. A lot of people don’t like it, but let’s leave that aside, we are talking about cloud backups. Already most online backup services have updated their software to be compatible. The drill is the usual, the software sits in the background and uploads all your important files to the cloud, so if your PC fails, you have remote backups that you can recover at any time.

But which service should you choose? It’s not an easy choice, since there are over 50 services now offering cloud backups, all with different prices and storage space, as well as different features. So which should you choose? Well, I’ve reviewed over 50 services, so I’m going to list the top 5 here for you to evaluate.

I’ve written a summary table just here, and below that I’ll get into the details of each.

Here’s a more detailed look at each service:

Winner – MyPCBackup

Logo

MyPCBackup is a UK company that has built their software based on simplicity and ease of use. This together with unlimited space from $6.95 per month puts them at number 1 on this list. You can (read our full review here. The software runs great on Windows 8 (well, any platform to be honest), and you won’t run into any problems installing it or setting it up, it mostly just works out of the box, and you can tweak it if you want.

You can get a small package of 75GB for only $4.95 per month, but you can even get unlimited storage for only $6.95 per month if you pay upfront. That is one of the best prices we’ve found for unlimited space.

The only real negative we can say about them, is they only have email support, no phone support. Since they are built for simplicity though, does that really matter? I don’t think so. Another small negative is that there aren’t any power user features, but all tweaking is there for 99% of users, so it’s great for most people backing up to the cloud.

2. Carbonite – From $59 Per Year

Logo

Carbonite is one of the best, and most advertised online backup companies. It has unlimited storage backup, but only for one computer at just $59 per year. That’s the reason they are number 2, as you can only back up once device, and MyPCBackup beats them on that. HomePremier plan ($149 per year) will let you restore using courier recovery service (they will send you an external hard drive with your data on it). That’s a great service if you don’t want to be downloading 100GB of backups. Carbonite’s client software also seems to be built specially for Windows and Windows only. Here is our full review about Carbonite.

3. BackBlaze – From $3.96 Per Month

Logo

Backblaze are a company in the US, and they have been growing steadily over the last few years. Their selling point is online backups for under $5 a month with unlimited space. They do limit you a bit though, there are file size and type restrictions, so you need to check that out before you buy. But fundamentally their software is pretty neat and easy to use, and it works out of the box. There’s also quite a big discount to be had if you pay for two years upfront. 4. Mozy – From $5.99 Per Month

Logo

Mozy used to be the best, but they’ve been out competed recently. Since they dropped their unlimited storage plan, and with so many other awesome providers in the market right now, Mozy will be our #4 or #5 choice. Still, it offers really good software packed with features but straightforward to use (that seems contradictory but believe us), and rock solid customer service. You can get a personal plan from $5.99 per month for 50GB, or $9.99 per month for 125GB. They also have a new syncing service called Mozy Stash. And you can also have Mozy 2x Protect, which will give you local backups on top of your online backups to Mozy servers. They are still highly recommended if you fit into their space requirements, I mean not everyone needs unlimited GB backups :) Read our full review about Mozy here.

5. ZipCloud – From $4.95 Per Month

Logo

ZipCloud is great for non-savvy users. Fundamentally it was built for the Mac, but it has held it’s ground on Windows 8 too. It isn’t packed with advanced huge features, just the minimums, but those minimums are enough for most users. They back up your data to amazon data centers, which are very secure data centers so your data will definitely be safe.

Their basic package can cost just $3.95 per month if you pay upfront, which is a great price. Unlimited storage is also available at under $7 per month, another awesome price. We have a review published here if you want more details.

Conclusion

While it’s difficult to choose, as all services are great, we do recommend MyPCBackup the most, it’s a great service. The price is good, it won’t break the bank and has unlimited space. If you only want to back up 1 PC, not phones or other devices, Carbonite is great, but expect to pay upfront for it.
